One of the chores that Chinese tend to do during their spring cleaning is to “Shai Bei Zi” (晒被子), which literally means to “Sunbathe Blankets” or hang them out in the sun. The purpose is to kill germs and warm them.
When Tian’s mom was here in March she took charge of that chore while we were at work and brought all of our blankets out to the common area outside our front door to hang for an afternoon. I wasn’t sure if it did much good though, partially because she used the public exercise machines to hang them on, and usually a layer of dust is on those. But she said she wiped them off first. I guess it was better than using the ground.
