“Bian Lian” is the Chinese performance art of face changing. The performer, who is dressed elaborately and moves erratically to dramatic music, quickly changes masks in a blink of an eye much to the delight of the audience.
Traditionally, “Bian Lian” is a secret skill that started over 300 years ago and must be kept within a family and passed on from generation to generation. In the past only males were allowed to learn it, as females would leave the family once they married. Nowadays, it is not as much of a secret, but it is still a skill to be respected and admired.
