I have been so fortunate to work with many great staff members over the years at Breakthrough Saint Paul. Most recently, those great staff members have included Jennifer, Ashley, and Jey. They definitely will be the part of the job that I miss the most.
The reasons for missing them are plentiful. From the hidden mice pranks to making up new games on airplanes, from sharing starbursts to conversing together with songs on the radio, they made coming to work everyday as fun as it was rewarding. They have a sincere dedication to our mission, and always go above and beyond to realize it. Each day we overcame challenges as a team and learned a lot from each other.
Having each of these staff members still involved with Breakthrough Saint Paul really made my decision to leave possible. I know that they have the experience and skills necessary to continue building our program in the next chapter. Jennifer and Ashley are continuing on staff and planning to stick around. And even though her VISTA position has technically ended, Jey is still playing a leadership role with the city-wide launch of the math tutoring curriculum we built last year for the SPPS Foundation. Emily is lucky to work with such inspiring people.
This summer has been a bittersweet one for me because I knew it would mean saying “Zai Jian” (goodbye) to some great friends for now. Fortunately it has been a progressive process starting with the toast and roast, continuing with celebration, and culminating with faculty and staff POL’s. Then on Monday, we went out to lunch just as a staff and celebrated the transition with Jennifer before she left on vacation. On Friday, my last day, Ashley and I spent time together doing what we did so often, working late finishing up an important project.
It’s been a blast working and playing together! I hope we get a chance to do it again sometime somewhere.
